Planning a gym

Planning and installing a corporate gym can be a daunting exercise. It is a task that you are unlikely to want to face alone. That is where Totally Fitness comes in. Our name says it all – we have extensive expertise and experience of the health and fitness industry and we are totally dedicated to helping you to get the right solution. We are a team of genuinely friendly and accessible people, who have impressive knowledge and understanding of what it takes to create a corporate gym and which solution will best meet your commercial fitness requirements. We also have seven showrooms across the UK where you can try out our equipment. So whether you need a gym for five people that fits into 10 square metres or a fitness suite for 500 users to suit a 100 square metre space, we can create and install the perfection solution for your situation.

We have significant experience – including working with the likes of BP, Harley Davidson and Screwfix.

We only install premium equipment – which we know you can rely on. Premium does not necessarily mean expensive.

We offer impartial advice – recommending what is best for you, not what is best for us.

We offer exceptional customer service – something that does not end with the sale.

We offer a total service – we understand that you want a gym but you do not want to become a gym specialist, and that is why we do everything for you.

We can also help with everything from financing and maintenance contracts to gym flooring and audiovisual equipment.

Commercial fitness equipment

When it comes to choosing fitness equipment, our customers usually have three key criteria: safety, durability and price.

At Totally Fitness, we recommend the most appropriate equipment to meet your specific needs, selecting from a wide range of the best products on the market.

We can supply everything from commercial cardio machines to small sets of hand weights, as well as all the other items you will need, such as gym flooring, mirrors and flat screen TV’s.
We pride ourselves on always being up to date with the latest innovations, no matter how big or small.

Among other specialist manufacturers, we supply high quality equipment from:
• LifeFitness
• Vision
• Precor
• Cybex

Let us do the working out

We have designed and installed gyms in a number of weird and wonderful locations – including lighthouses, oil rigs and luxury yachts – so nothing gets us hot and bothered!

We can maximise your space without compromising safety and accessibility. We are happy to recommend the ideal position of new equipment within a dedicated space, or make improvements to an existing area.

Why not send the dimensions of your proposed gym space to our Computer Aided Design (CAD) team and ask them to suggest a design that meets your budget?

Finance and leasing options

We offer a range of flexible purchasing options, which are designed to help you to make the most of your investment. Regardless of your specific gym requirements, we can create a convenient payment plan, with payments spread for as long as 60 months.

More on leasing

These examples of typical packages will hopefully act as a general guide:

Platinum Gym Package – would suit 20 users and a space of 6 x 10m

Gold Gym Package - would suit 15 users and a space of 6m x 9m

Silver Gym Package – would suit 10 users and a space of 6m x 7m

Service and maintenance

With regular service and expert maintenance, you will have the peace of mind that your equipment is being serviced on a regular basis and that your staff and team are using safe equipment plus the life of your gym equipment can be significantly extended. That’s why we offer ongoing service and maintenance contracts to help you keep your investment in optimal health. With a service and maintenance contract from Totally Fitness, you will benefit from regular preventative maintenance visits to ensure that the equipment remains in top condition and that your users can continue to enjoy the facility safely. Contracts are usually for three years, with two preventative maintenance visits from an engineer a year. Depending on the equipment a three year contract can cost as little as £1,800 or £600 pa.

In the future, as demand for your gym changes, we can review your layout and offer free re-designs. In addition, we will monitor the equipment over its lifetime and let you know if any item requires replacement. If that is the case, our team can offer professional advice on the most appropriate replacement equipment or discuss upgrade options. We can even provide a personal trainer to carry our personal or group gym induction sessions.

Light commercial or Full commercial?

We supply a wide range of light commercial and full commercial equipment from some of the major brands such as LifeFitness, Vision, Precor and Cybex. We also produce our own range of full commercial strength equipment. Light commercial equipment is generally half the price of full commercial equipment. Most full commercial equipment has a one year warranty, whereas a light commercial warranty can be up to two years.

Light commercial equipment is perfect for a gym where the anticipated use is less than five hours a day. Typical examples are schools, hotels and staff gyms.

Full commercial equipment is installed where the expected use is more than five hours a day. Typical examples are healthclubs, school and office gyms that are open to staff and the community in the evenings and at weekends. Our full commercial strength range can be customised with your school or company logo at no extra cost and has proved very popular with clients as this creates a ‘club’ feel to the gym.

How long does it take?

We can install a gym in as little as four weeks

From receipt of your purchase order and deposit – the lead time on the equipment is usually four to six weeks – and can be longer for bespoke pieces such as customised strength equipment, benches with logos etc. To arrange installation of the equipment – we need to have a completed installation questionnaire which includes information on access details, width restrictions, lift sizes etc. Once the equipment has been installed and tested by our trained engineers we can provide an induction to your key staff. This takes around an hour and provides instruction on how to use the equipment most effectively and how to maintain and look after it on a regular basis.

To make sure your staff make the most of the gym – we would encourage you to have regular visits from a personal trainer. We can help you with finding a local personal trainer. We would also advise that you have a signing in book (rather like a guest book) in the gym. This will enable you to monitor how often the gym is being used and will also pick up on any minor equipment problems. A laminated list of gym rules on the wall will help staff use the gym safely and with courtesy to other users. Some firms also choose to have a disclaimer on the wall.

Expected demand

We recommend that you survey the staff and collate and analyse their responses. A suitable room for a gym is also important. This will depend upon the size of your organisation, location and management support. We have installed corporate gyms in rooms that are only 5 x 5m (25m2) for companies with 30 employee’s right up to much larger staff gyms for companies with several thousand employees. Some companies choose to charge a nominal fee to access the gym. This gives employees the feeling that they are getting something for their money (social club membership fees etc), increases use and lends to the equipment being valued and respected.

According to Lord Digby Jones, former Director-General of the CBI, the installation of an in-house fitness facility at work can improve the productivity of your work force and your company’s performance. “In today’s highly competitive times, businesses are continually looking for factors which will provide greater effectiveness or productivity and give them the edge over competition. For any business to operate at optimum strength, it’s people need to be energetic, creative and innovative. A Corporate wellness programme is one of the surest ways to develop employee morale, performance and productivity.”

Room requirements

The room needs to have ceiling height of at least 2.2m (7ft 2”) – this is important so that an average height man on a crosstrainer does not bump his head on the ceiling when on a crosstrainer or treadmill. Flooring can be anything from concrete, to carpet, to wooden tiles or gym rubber flooring. If a wooden floor needs to be protected or is slippery we can supply PVC mats to go under the equipment and strength area. If the gym is not on the ground floor noise insulation needs to be taken into account. Walls can be left plane or mirrors can be used to create that ‘typical’ gym feel. Mirrors cost around £100 per square metre and can be glued onto the wall.

Atmosphere and ambiance

What type of gym are you are trying to create? Totally Fitness – with its wealth of experience can clearly help with this. Generally a good balance of cardiovascular equipment and strength equipment is popular with staff. Some companies or schools prefer not to have any free weights due to safety concerns – and opt for a multigym. Male dominated companies might have Olympic weights and a boxing area. Female dominated companies may prefer more space for stretching and step work.

Gym design

A gym plan will enable you to visualise the equipment, make the most of the available space and make sure that the equipment can be used safely. Commercial cardiovascular equipment all requires power – generally 240volts/13amps. The machine leads are around 1m long – so the equipment needs to be placed fairly close to a power supply. For light commercial equipment it is usually only the treadmills that require power. Our corporate team would be delighted to put together a CAD for you. You can email a dwg file (corporate@totallyfitness.com) or even fax through a sketch on the back of an envelope and see what suggestions the corporate can come up with.

Alternatively, why not put together your own plan using our online gym planner tool.
