Fitness enthusiasts looking to purchase a new treadmill should ensure that they establish the range of incline that the machine offers, according to experts.

Rahul Verghese, founder of Runningandliving.com, said that keep-fit fans check that they can increase the incline between one and ten degrees at least, reports Livemint.com.

He also noted that the possible speeds of the treadmill are also crucial. Basic models have a maximum speed of around 12 kmph.

However, he commented: "It"s preferable to look at one that goes up to around 16 kmph (or ten miles per hour), and if you are looking to push yourself a bit, then look at 20 kmph."

Some buyers may wish to purchase a treadmill with a programme scheduler or pulse monitors, but features such as this are not essential, according to Mr Verghese.

Experts at Treadmill Talk advise those who wish to replicate running outside should try increasing the incline of their machine for a tougher workout.
