A charity treadmill event has raised £865 in one day for a centre which helps people with learning difficulties.

Staff and users of the Focal Point Day Resource Centre donned their running shoes and completed the equivalent distance of two marathons to raise funds for new rowing machines at the centre, reports the Salisbury Journal.

Methods used by fundraisers to complete the distance included a treadmill and an exercise bike.

Pam Greensmith, team leader for the centre, told the newspaper: "It was absolutely brilliant. Some of the folks did much more than we expected them to be able to do, which was great."

Some people with learning difficulties can feel uncomfortable going to the gym, so the centre has introduced its own exercise equipment to enable them to enjoy physical exercise safely among friends, she added.

Last month, a Falmouth chip shop owner also took to the treadmill in aid of charity as she prepared to run her first London Marathon to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboats Institution, reported the Falmouth Packet.
