Rowing machines are "excellent for working the often-overlooked upper back", according to fitness instructor Derek DeBono.

Writing in Canadian newspaper the Windsor Star, Mr DeBono states that rowers can get "a complete high-calorie burning workout in a short amount of time", which consequently offers a number of health benefits.

The expert does suggest there are a number of points rowers should be aware of before using the fitness equipment.

"The most common mistake, especially when fatigue sets in, is to bend the knees first before you return to the set position," Mr DeBono indicates in his newspaper column.

Apparently, this can cause a person"s hips to move forward, which leaves their upper body behind and places stress on "an already weak lower back".

It is also suggested that other athletes use rowing machines to help them stay fit. For example, rowing machines can be an ideal cross-training tool for runners due to the non weight-bearing nature of the fitness equipment.

The British Olympic rowing team are currently preparing for this year"s Beijing Games, using rowing machines as part of their workouts.
