The X-Dream exercise bike from Trixter combines video gaming technology to create "extra realism and motivation", while burning 55 per cent more calories than standard exercise bikes, according to reports.

Magazine ShortList named the bike as its "Fitness Product of the Week" on the strength of its realistic experience.

The bike uses a display screen to play various landscapes, such as parks, highlands and desert, in front of the rider, while also using "real feel" gears, brakes and handlebars to simulate the experience of riding outdoors.

In total, there are five bike types available on the machine, each with its own handling characteristics, while the simulation programme replicates a variety of terrain conditions, gradients and tracks.

Furthermore, the X-Dream"s fitness mode allows a rider to compete against five virtual cyclists. Winning a race unlocks another of the machine"s 20 tracks.

Those wishing to test themselves against the real thing can also use the bike"s "multiplayer" mode, which allows up to six X-Dreams to be linked for head-to-head races.

The bike also comes with a personal trainer mode that provides a range of workout programmes, as well as feedback on performance.
